The Sugilite Collection

Sugilte is a mineral that is only found in gem-quality in the Kalahari Manganese Fields in the Northern Cape of South Africa. It is, however, only extracted as a by-product of manganese, one of South Africa’s largest mineral exports. For these reasons it is an extremely rare and highly sought-after gemstone.

Jay was given a few pieces of rough in the 1990’s by a collector friend, and immediately fell in love with this purple rock. Still in the late 90’s, she jumped into her 1400 Nissan bakkie and headed for Hotazel in the Northern Cape, to see for herself where this beautiful mineral, unique to the area, is mined. Since she has been shaping beautiful pieces of jewellery from this material by hand in her workshop.
